No complaints! HAHA
Oh!!! We have moorhens in the dell! I LOVE them - especially the way they strut through the water. They always look happy little chappies to me.
Ours are a bit darker though - I think that is probably because they have not been bleached by the sun. ha ha!
I'm spoilt for choice in a search for a favourite photo amongst this lot - they are all grand!
Are your Moorhens 'dusky' Miladysa? These ones do appear darker when not in full sunlight, and of course the sweet chick is naturally lighter. Thank you for the photo compliment :)
When we went out boating on the Hawkesbury, I saw a moorhen walk across the water! Only to realise that the weeds had grown just under the surface and almost out to the middle! Made me laugh! (Almost had a religious moment!) ahahahahahahah!
Stumped me there Anon.
I just googled 'em and this is what UK ones look like:
http://www.moorhen.demon.co.uk/moorhen1.htm
I would have sent you the link by email but could not find one.
HAHHAAA, you know the same happened to me Simon when first started watching them! We might owe our bird watching lives to these Moorhens! :) Simon, check THIS post!
Miladysa, the Dusky Moorhen is found from Indonesia through New Guinea to Australia, and yours has white flecked wings and VERY yellow legs but they otherwise look VERY MUCH the same bird :)
Moorhens and Swamphens are water hens and not ducks as their names suggest ...
Those are some funky chicken! Wasn't that a dance?
You have FORGOTTEN the Funky Chicken Dance Tony!?! HERE Wanna dance BWARK? Sorry James Brown isn’t here … or was that dance from Sesame Street?
It's definitely not the Funky Gibbon by The Goodies.
Modroom, so lets NOT all do the funky gibbon; Ooo, ooo, ooo! HAHHAAA Should put a LINKY to that one Modroom :)
Oh yes I like that! Bill Oddie is probably writing books about Gibbon-spotting these days, he should get round to your place hee hee.
Mostly because I'm STILL only half way through reading Bill Oddie's Little Black Bird Book, I need a gibbon to tell me the rest ...
"oooo ooooo oo oooo ooo. oo oo oooo oooooo oo ooo.
ooo oo oo oo oo, oo oo ooo oo oo. oo.
the oo oo end."
Hello, are you sure you aren't Captain Gorilla? Can't understand a word ...
That bird has got a head like a can opener. Does it eat baked beans?
speaking of baked beans and Boiledegginadeckchair...I have a Australian receipe book that was printed in the 1800's.
It tells you how to cook these birds! true!
I would stuff them up a rocket and bake them.
Then I would boil them.
I believe you Simon! Especially since we also eat the animals off our Coat of Arms!
Hhehheee baked beans don't necessarily taste better with boiled eggs, BoiledEggInADeckchair! Beanz meanz fartz!!
Then I would mash them up.
And put the mash in a canon and blow it through the wall.
*CRUNCH*!
I like your moorhens, I'd like mine minced, and served with marmalade.
And bananas.
It's time for an announcement:
NO EATING GUESTS AT THE POOL PARTY!
Hello Red Mojo, pleased to hear you only eat YOUR Moorhens ;)
*SQUASH* BoiledEggInADeckchair!
ahahahahah!
I had exactgly that for my birthday- emu and Kanga! a few years back..YUMO!
Eggactly Simon! HAHHAHHAA!! We eat Kangaroo sausages on a weekly basis. Emu is a bit gamey like Buffalo. Crocodile is my favourite :)
I bet you're bunged up for a week after that lot.
:o)
tried it all....
I love the little chick - so cute! :)
I don't eat all of it in a week Mr Totties! In fact I don't get bunged up! Beanz are good for helping that problem!
You're a true Blue Aussie then Simon :)
Isn't it Lavender! So quiet too, I was lucky to spot it by eye balancing on the lily pads ;)
What beauties! I'm missing our water birds a lot -- not even many Canada geese this year and they're plentiful normally. They'll all be back in the spring. Seeing your moorhens is a treat, especially the little bitty one! :)
red mojo is getting violent, after she came across as so sweet when pierette and ces attacked you. (pierette, please forgive me for using the word 'attack'--writers can be so dramatic.
i have been too self-absorbed to look at birds. but maybe today i will be better. squawk!
Isn't the little bitty one a darling Melissa! In fact all the waterbirds have young ones perfect ages for entering the modeling world for their first time right now :)
OH i'm glad you are sufficiently civilized just like me KJ! Hhahhahhaa Red Mojo could have preferred her moorhens minced and served with raspberry jam which would have been even more violent! At least they're her moorhens and not mine ;) Welcome back KJ :)
I don't think this chicken will taste good. I would think that it will be gamey just like the pheasant which I won't eat because it has small bones. I do not eat chicken with bones. My chickens come from a boneless chicken farm and their only body parts are breasts, so try to imagine a boneless chicken breast farm...
These are arguably the stupidest birds in Australia and deserve to be eaten. They start to cross the road, change their mind then walk back into the path of oncoming traffic. They should all be on the menu!
Think the Moorhens would taste just as gamey as emu Ces! Maybe not so oily :) I'm trying NOT to image breasts being farmed HAHAHA!
Hhehheee, so Baino does NOT like Moorhens! What about Swamphens, they tend to stay more in the swamps although have seen them in a carpark moseying amongst garbage behind a factory ...
