White-faced Heron

Regardless we are in shallow wetland and considering the White-faced Heron has lengthy legs, we are getting into deeper water!

Watch out! The Heron has a specialised arrangement of the neck vertebrae for suddenly straightening the curved neck to increase speed of thrust! Looks like his legs have a special way of arranging too!

Wow, That's a pretty heron. Wohoo! Proof on the 2 foot entrance, and knee-deep too! Beautiful pics.

HAAHAA! Very pretty Red Mojo, and this one was quite 'wild'; it took a long time to edge closer for photographs. Deep in concentration though whilst fishing for afternoon tea :)

Just wait until Miss Melissa gets here! ;]

Anon:- I have a White faced heron that nests in our Turpentine tree!

We are in the mountains (as you know), and not so close to the river or dams.

My kids used to call it the death bird! ( urgh) because it seemed to follow me around the back yard (obviously looking for things I disturbed in the grass) it walked like an undertaker...
(I am not trying to sound "black"...). then one day I went down the river to kayak and a White faced heron landed a few minutes after I unloaded..... it was really weird becasue it just stood there looking at me! I felt quite uncomfortable.

Anyway every year it turns up for 3 years... I shall post a photo on my "Favorite bird"

:o)

You are blessed to be chosen to be stalked (haahaa) by a White-faced Heron Simon! Today we'll all fly over to see your 'Favourite Bird' posted in your sidebar :)

Milady, you're right! :) I hollered, "Oooo! A heron!" as soon as I saw these shots!

Anon -- herons are very special to me -- I always see one when I've made a big decision and have really worked hard at making the wise choice. I have one tatooed on my back, too! :) I've not seen a white-faced one -- lovely, lovely.

OOOHHHH now there are more who know about your special relationship with Herons, Melissa! How WONDERFUL, which type has been tattooed? The white-faced Heron is also often called a 'Blue Crane', it's dispersive or part-migratory moving to Indonesia, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand during Winter :)

My "totem" the great-blue heron is my tattoo -- Eli designed it. It's all black and took an hour and a half to do. ouch. :) I love the shading of the white's face -- so beautiful. I love sandhill cranes, too. Have you heard of operationmigration.org?

Melissa, I just googled the Great-blue Heron, and our closest looking is the 'Grey Heron' which might even be a very close relative because widespread in Europe, Asia, and Africa. I like its long and plume-like neck feathers :) The Sandhill Crane is wearing a fine red hat of feathers and is also a large grayish-bodied wader!

Our local paper often calls for participants in Operation Migration but I am tied to the immediate local area and computer ... Not enough time really but add to their database any unusual sightings when I see them :)

Tattoos!!! Generally, I do not like tattoos. Once a very handsome young doctor in the emergency room told me he had a tattoo of an alligator on his gluteus maximus. I did not believe him so he lowered his scrubs and behold, I saw the first white ass that did not belong to a patient.

The above anecdote has nothing to do with the beautiful photographs of this heron which is among my favorite birds and can be seen on my drawings on top of trees, wading in the water, among the reeds...another great job Anon.

Like our beautiful great blue heron, your white faced heron has such a pretty shade of blue... I want to paint my house that color. :)

Tell us more Ces! ;)

Hahaha! How about I draw the episode this weekend? Hahaha!
...no, I'll draw birds and trees instead...hahahah!

Yes, yes, yes Ces! Hahaha! ... oh, okay ;) Hhehhehhee!

Melissa said...

Haa haaa! You all make me laugh! :) And I vote for Ces to draw a recreation of the scrubs-lowering event!! That poor black swan is saying, "Hey, this post is about ME! Not your blasted tattoos and handsome disrobed tooties!"

Melissa said...

Wait ... I've been side-tracked by the mental image of naked rear ends ... I meant *heron* ... sorry, love. :)

Draw the doctor with the lowered scrubs please Ces and if he was butt ugly (sorry I could not resist that one) make sure you improve his looks with your magic pencil! hee hee :)

Very entertaining post! Strictly for the birds methingks? (not the feathered kind either) Hey we all like a man in uniform, lowered scrubs or not! And the heron is lovely. They fly very gracefully also. I agree tho Anon, not easy getting close. Then birds see me coming a mile away!

My totem is a Tawny Frogmouth. Not very pretty but graceful and unusual.

Feel free to comment about derrieres as much as you feel Ces ;) Hhehhehee ... will be back later ...
