Can you spot the Nankeen Kestrel in each photograph? The last one has two!

A rare event mostly showing people on BirdAnonymous! The couple of Nankeen Kestrels often hang in the sky with the parafliers on the weekend. This post has been submitted to SKY WATCH FRIDAY!

This is great. I know you make it look so easy to photograph birds but the other day, a pigeon was walking in front of us, the entire city block and it was not even running or hoping. I tried to photograph it but I could not even make a decent photograph. One clear photograph out of 8 grainy ones. The pigeon was mocking me.

Excellent Sky Watching.. spotter the Kes.

Hello, good morning Ces :) It can feel like the birds are mocking when you're in pursuit of them with a camera ;)

Thanks Tom! Well done spotting, I can't see anything yet because need my morning coffee! HAHA!!

Maria said...

Haha, good morning! Nice SWF pics!
I'll go to sleep now :)

HAHA, we are on opposite sides of the sky Maria :) Thanks!

Maria said...

HAHAHA! Right!

this is just brilliant! That bird must have enjoyed you taking its picture. I see he/she was very photogenic. :-]

I wonder what the kestrels were making of the flying people!

Anonymous said...

It's raining on both sides of the sky Maria!

Hello Rachel*, it does appear the Kestrels were flying in formation for the camera ;) Thanks!

I wondered the same SandyCarlson! They had to be playing because practise the same on a regular basis :)

Interesting juxtaposition. I wonder what the birds think about people pretending to fly

Interesting series of photos; I enjoyed seeing the kestrels sort of keeping an eye on the people. Very nice Sky Watch!

kjpweb said...

Cool - looks as if the birds were playing along! That's a great SWF!
Fun to look at!
Cheers, Klaus

Yes, I can spot it. But where were YOU?! Especially that close-up one in the middle of just the edge of the sail makes me wonder.

Fabulous pictures!

HAHAAA, the Kestrels could be flying around completely perplexed Wren!

You're right Pat-AnArkansasStamper! Perhaps the birds are protecting their nest from the GIANTS flying nearby! Thanks :)

That's my guess Klaus :) It's a very regular 'game' which has been going on at this spot for as long as people have been flying there! Thankyou for having fun :)

Hhehheee you caught me Louise! Thanks. That's my sail on the edge ;)

Inventive and Beautiful shots!

Brilliant photos!

tsduff said...

I only saw the kestrels after you mentioned them... I was enchanted with the kites/hang gliders/wind sailers or whatever they are! Love the pictures :)

laughingwolf said...

almost as much fun as the birds have :)

Melissa said...

I thought I had the wrong blog for a second there and then I saw the kestrel in the corner! :D Great shots -- one of those "who's watching whom" moments!

Anonymous said...

Thanks Donna :)

Simon, their breeding season is July through to November. However this pair don't migrate North like many others and remain on these cliffs all year long. This is because there is an abundance of food for them here already :)

Thankyou Mick :)

Hi TsDuff :) I could have cropped the images to see the Kestrels larger but that would have also cropped out the pleasure of seeing the 'human birds'!

That would be the fliers LaughingWolf :) Did you count the Kestrels?

HAHA, you're right Melissa! Person watches the bird watches the people :) The images can be enlarged to see all Kestrels, I guess some screens are smaller than mine ;)

People pretending to be birds. Wonderful shots.

I love soaring birds, they do so often seem to indulge just for fun. We have a pelican that comes here every year, just one . . hangs around for a month or so then disappears (I think he's fishing carp out of the dam on the golf club) but spends a load of time just soaring and staring . . .great shots as usual (although I'm still blown away by yesterday's)No pet names today!

Rose said...

I DID notice the kestrel first thing and thought how awesome. It was your lucky day to capture it with the people wishing they were birds.

ElizT said...

The kestrels might think that the sails have found good prey.

Anonymous said...

HAHA, funny isn't it Babooshka!

Hello Petal ;) It must feel good to soar, although birds still keep an eye open for food with their 'bird's eye view'! Thanks Baino :))

You're right Rose - those people DO wish to be birds!

HAHHAAA, never seen a Kestrel trying to take a bite out of a human 'catch' ElizT :)

i'm raising and twisting and moving and holding my camera to get even a puny shot of a bird (with you in mind) and here you go again posting another fantabulous group of photos.

Hey KJ, raising, twisting and moving with the camera is what it's all about! Thanks KJ :)

Nothing like blue sky and bright colours to promote 'happiness' Chrome3D ;) There's also the 'freedom' birds have ;)

It IS fun Scotty Graham!!! Thankyou :)

Maria said...

I just looked up "kestrel" in LEO online dictionary :)
Turmfalke! Oh, they also live in the tower of St. Stephen's cathedral in the heart of the city! When my window is open, I often hear their calls high above in the sky!
Yes,now I can see on the photos that they are really kestrels!
Good shots!

Hi Maria how exciting!!! The Nankeen Kestrels are sometimes called Australian Kestrels. There's probably a difference between ours with colour. I know what one of your new missions is going to be now ;) Still working and having a hard time catching up with posts before Saturday. WHAAA!!!!

Maria said...

WHAAA! Fortunately we don't have too much work at the office now due to holiday season but this will change soon.
Nice weekend to you!

I did see the kestrel (and the two in the last one), and I wondered what they were thinking about the large colorful birds flying with them. Great Sky Watch!

Our holidays ended last week which is why I'm slowing down online Maria! HOHUM back in the office again but family barbecue tomorrow. Weather permitting.

I guess everyone has imagined flying, at least in their dreams APhotoADay :)

Just checking LaughingWolf, you haven't given the count yet ;)

Hhhee, thankyou Mary!

You're right Lara! They could make a show of it. OH, they were already!!!

I think the Kestrels were just having fun, Carole :) Thanks!
