Can hardly see the Purple Swamphen from the swamp!
Yep... that is a purple swamphen alright... recognised it straight away ;-D
Hmmmm Miladysa, the vibrant blue of 'Purple' Swamphens and the plum purple of the Glossies below could make an interesting combination for the Melbourne Cup horse race in the shape of a hat... although the Swamphens are a little too common :) I'll be over to yours to see your rookery very soon Miladysa ;)
*plop*
No one is going to notice your *plop* in a swamp full of other plops Mr Pigeon!
Tsup*!* ooer that's not a very nice way to describe those Swaphens lol *!* They're not too common out my way and I love to glimpse them every now and then Tsup*!*
Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! Hhehhee, I forgot they probably aren't so 'common' in most other places. We have them in swamps, waterways, in the middle of roadways and in garbage cans here! I have to admit, stalking them deep inside a swamp is fun; I feel a little like Indiana Jones but a lot more poised :)
They are more akin to Coots and Moorhens but are scavengers and ancient looking with their forehead shields, Debra Kay :) There are clearer photographs if you click on the 'Purple Swamphen' Label in the sidebar.
Has anyone noticed there are two Swamphens ... one in a nest?
How chaotic. You think she'd keep a tidier nest... really!
Their platform of trampled reeds with surrounding vegetation for shelter is not made messy by the female alone and she refuses to clean up the mess made by others, G3TFilms! In fact, all family members, including the young from a previous brood, share in incubation and care of the young :)
So what you're saying is that although chaotic they work well as an extended family unit?
Damn Hippies!
That's right G3TFilms! But I don't think hippies would agree to their reputed egg stealing and eating cute fluffy ducklings :O
Ahhh... they're communists then ;)
HAHA, then how could they be as 'common' as they are here, when they don't even believe in class divisions G3TFilms? OH! They might think of us as their equals!?! They certainly believe in 'freedom' and are very commonly seen eating the surplus from garbage bins on private property!
You only THINK its private property! But when the revolution comes and the PSP, (no not PlayStation Portable but Peoples Swamphen Party) rise up and rest control from the bourgeois land owners you'll learn what we do with people who believe in private ownership, ooooh, you'll learn! Wait... what am I saying, I'm not a SwampHen... and a land owner... now I'm scared!
My swamp experience is further more improving!!! GO! RUN INTO THE SWAMP G3TFilms, be less poised and more like Indiana Jones! MWHAHHAHA
MerlinPrincesse is RIGHT! Phew ... they are only hillbillies and too chicken for anything else but! But G3TFilm's butt! Heehee...
Running... "I've got a bad feeling about this" wait... which character am I playing?
MerlinPrincesse is a Canuck...
mmmm...
OH! Nice bird! But I'm the nicest!!!! yukyukyuk...
BTW! Merlinprincesse is NOT a Canuk! She's a Québécoise! :)
*plop*
If you keep standing there like that, you'll be the 'trampled reed' G3TFilms!
MerlinPrincesse is really a French Mademoiselle Princesse Canuk in disguise! SCAT CAT!
What's a Herring Gull doing in Sydney? All the way from Quebec I suppose. How unusual!
Meyukyukyuk!!!!
];-]
The cat is going to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......
Goodzzzzzzzzzz Nightzzzzzzzzz Mademoiselle Anon...
I won't fall for your pretense Mademoiselle Princesse! SCAT CAT!!
I like Trout Fishing in Quebec
Ohhhh I see Trout Fishing in Quebec spend the bulk of their time slaying small animals and scanning the sky! There may be hope for you and the Swamphens to get along finely G3TFilms ;) As for MerlinPrincesse, The Herring Gull and Mademoiselle Princesse ... WATCH OUT!
That's only two of their members who are in a cult... the rest are just freaks. Like me and the Swamphens.
I see you and the cat have a love/hate relationship.
*!*Tsup oh I didn't realise the swaphen and the moorhen are not the same bird with two different names. Is the swamphen bigger then the moorhen? I remember as a kid being impressed that there was a bird that could walk on water when I saw my first moor hen Tsup*!*
What a lot of fuss! It's a Pukeko.
AWWWW bonding with the Swamphens G3TFilms ;) I'M A BIRD ... don't mention that CAT again!
Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! If you select the 'Dusky Moorhen' Label in the sidebar, you'll see there is quite a difference between the two! Purple Swamphens are 10cm larger, have robust red bills and legs whereas the Moorhens have yellow below the 'knees' and yellow tipped bills of a more pointed shape :) There is also a big difference between their 'blueness'. Hhehheee MOORHENS WALKING ON WATER ;)
HAHA, I read today your Pukekos originally came from Australia ElizT ;)
OOOHHH HERE is a post with both Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens in it Bimbimbie! Tsup*!*
Tsup*!* thanks for the extra photo links ... now I'm confused as to what birds I see around the dams. Sigh, will just have to politely ask the next one I see as to which one it might be ;) You would think they could be helpful and wear ID badges in a prominent spot Tsup*!*
Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! Once you're on the 'lookout' you'll quickly find your own way to identify between the two ;) I first look at the bill and the Swamphens wear 'badges' in the form of snow white feather undertails which are exposed with flicking :) I wouldn't be surprised if both kinds were your way!
Mwhahahahah!!!! There really is a group called "Trout Fishing in Quebec"!!! mmmm.... They look bizarre too! ;o)
Did you heard about that Quebecois group, "Bush Walking in Australia"??? Or that other... "Killing Kings in France" also known as "Walking with a Beret"... And the one from UK called " Eatin'PlumPudding in London"... *joking*....
I am NOT Mademoiselle Princesse... She's a pest!!!! I'm the kind one! :)
What beautiful blue! That's my favorite shade -- they look so colorful against the browns of the swamp and trees!
I was confused between the two as well. Turns out we don't have dusky's just the blue ones. Not the smartest of birdies, they start to cross the road, rethink and run back then make a bolt for it. Their newly hatched chicks look like black cotton wool on legs. By the way, you lot are mad!
Nice legs!
OH you had me going MerlinPrincesse! How kind was THAT? Hhehhheee
They do add colour to the environment where sky is seldom seen Melissa ;)
Blue Purple Swamphens Baino :) They are like giant chickens on the roads sometimes. We are mad!
Thankyou TsDuff! Hhahaa
Aha, its a gigantic moorhen! Or a coot...my favorite pair of coots are sitting on a nest right now, it looks like a volcano made out of sticks and random crap they dredged up from the boating lake like crisp packets and cans of lager...I really should photograph that, but it's in a scary part of town where the locals would take my camera and cook me over a bonfire. If they noticed the coots, they'd do that to them, too. Oh listen to me go on now that I can comment here again... But that is a beautiful bird, I bet it's all shiny and glossy and bad tempered,
HAHA, talk as much as you like Bird, it's great you can again! We have Eurasian Coots which are a lot smaller, black and white, completely different apart from the shield on their foreheads. I would LOVE to see a photograph of yours nesting but agree it isn't worth your life! HAHA ... take care!
