Lost

LOST

Jack the Red-collared Lorikeet

Handsome Jack!

Jack is very tame, talks and is the best looking bird around! He was last seen with a flock of Rainbow Lorikeets heading north. He’ll most probably visit people on their verandas for a snack and cuddle, perhaps not leaving when the rest of the flock flies forth. A red-collared Lorikeet looks like a Rainbow Lorikeet but has a red collar instead of green around his neck. He wears a black band with a number around his ankle.

Jack especially likes to snuggle behind necks or crawl into your jacket's hood or pockets. He might greet you with a "Hello" and a kiss. If it's night time he will blow three kisses and say "I love you" before falling asleep. Jack likes grapes more than any other fruit and will say "Thank you" if you give him a flower. He likes to place bottlebrush stamens between his feathers after a bath to smell nice.

Above is footage of how jealous the Rainbows can be about Jack’s stunning red collar. He is different from the locals in Sydney because his breed lives on the other side of Australia and he was hand reared.

Jack thought it was funny showing he could open the doors to his Castle, so we added peg locks to the doorways just in case he thought it was funnier to wait for us to laugh by being outside instead of inside his Castle. Yesterday morning he pushed the joke too far...

Jack joking around the Castle door!

Jack we miss you very, very much!

A large "PLONK" frightened off a flock of Rainbow Lorikeets when I dropped the washing basket in shock of seeing Jack's Castle door wide open. He took to the air with the Rainbows!

I’ll be very quiet in Blog Land this weekend because we have lost a very important family member and will be dedicating time to return Jack to safety.

OH, NO!!! :**( Anon, if I could catch a flight to Australia and help you find Jack, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm so sorry! I'm crying all over my keyboard ... please keep us posted and I will be hoping and praying that Jack will be found, or that he'll make his way back home to you and his castle very soon!

**weeping** and sending hugs to you and your family

Tsup*!* Oh no, I was hoping it wasn't going to be Jack :(

Have you put out an SOS to your local radio station? I've heard similar calls on our talkback shows - you know the gardening and such shows where you can put out his details and the area he was last seen ... Fingers crossed he's back with you very soon anony. tsup*!*

OH Anony . . that's awful. The radio announcement is a good idea and if his band is noticed, some kind person might corner him. At least he's off with a flock and not out in the wild on his own. I feel for you, I really do . . I get panicked whenever my dog runs off but she does come home. Fingers crossed and good Karma heading your way.

NO!
I have forgotten whether his wings are clipped. Let's hope he is as clever at getting found as that parrot in Tokyo. Put something on the national TV news.

I KNOW Melissa!!! Thankyou for your hugs and please don’t cry :) An aeroplane might knock Jack out of the sky anyway :O

It is SHOCKING news! Thanks for your concern Onedia :)

Thankyou Caroline! We do need luck as well as perseverance.

Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! I put an SOS out on our local radio after reading your suggestion - thankyou Tsup*!* :)

It IS awful Baino!!! There are three flocks who are daily visiting at the moment and he left with the morning one, I'm hoping. All I saw was a great rush of wings heading north when I dropped my washing basket. Please try to cross your eyes for us as well :)

YES ElizT! We didn't clip his wings because he's a bird and that would be like chopping a person's toes off. Jack also loved daily flying around the house visiting each room to say hello to occupants. We felt flying was too important. I just sent a news release to the National Media! Thankyou :)

Please don't try flying over here KJ, you might bump into Jack being an unpractised flyer :) There is a chance we will find him the same way he came to us. Sydney Wildlife, local vets and pet shops have all been sent his photograph and details. There are posters on the telegraph poles and we will be doing shop windows later today. There is a notice published in today's local paper. Thankyou KJ!

That's terrible, terrible news! Gosh, poor little fella, he's going to be so frightened.

I really hope he flys back in with the flock. I am glad he's with the flock though, he'll definitely be safer with all those extra eyes on watch.

Mooncar and I are crossing all our crossable bits for you and Jack.

Oh my god! This is the saddest news. He has to come back. He must. I am so sorry Sweet sweet Anon. Hugs.

i have a good feeling anon. love and posters will bring him back.

Please watch for Jack turning his beak up at your seeds, CHIRRUP, Chi'ip, Tsup, Chirrup, Tsup, Chi Chu, Chirrup, Tsup, Soooowoowwoo Chirrup! Lorikeets are highly mobile and can travel more than 50km from roost to feeding site!

Thankyou G3TFilms and Mooncar :) It was awful at 5pm last night when Jack was supposed to come inside. He is easily spooked and can’t see too well at night! Even though the Rainbows are jealous of his red collar, they allowed him to fly with them over a year ago when we first found Jack. He just didn’t fly off from the person’s veranda because wanted a personal treat first. I would feel a bit better if saw a photo of you and Mooncar crossing all your crossable bits ;)

Lorikeets spend 70% of their time in outer foliage of tall trees so we are looking upwards all weekend Ces! The Rainbows are frequently seen with Musk Lorikeets and I was stalking those and Little Lorikeets last Sunday, so know where they are too! It is very sad… I like hugs :)

I have a bit better feeling now KJ :) There was a young fan club of Jack’s from the local primary school and even though they go to different high schools now, half a dozen kids turned up here. A team just set off on skateboards and bikes with Jack’s poster taped onto their backs!

Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! Everyone has been so good today with many having sore necks from looking up at tree tops all day long! A local bird rescue expert suggested we put Jack's inside cage up into the Lorikeet Tree with his favourite foods inside, which we'll try tomorrow.

It is very sad Simon, but feels better when taking positive action instead of sitting around. Jack wasn't with the SIX flocks who visited today but I'm fortunate to know all the Lorikeet hangouts in the area ;) We’ll see Jack again because of the numbered band on his ankle … even if not for another year …

Tomorrow's post will be much later because I don't have one yet. Perhaps it will be Monday. Also have many, many of your posts to catch up on which won't happen until the weekend is over ... sorry!

Bimbimbie said...

Tsup*!* Good idea about the cage ... just as long as Jack doesn't wait till his mates go inside and lock them all in tsup*!*

Anonymous said...

Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! That sounds just like Jack! At least we'll know he's visited and is keeping up his cheekiness :) Thanks for the giggle!!

Bimbimbie's comment cracks me up. Can you post a "Lost Pet" notice on television? We are talking about a special bird here.

I posted a "Lost" on my blog for Jack. He is my appropriate entry for Illustration Friday's "worry" topic.

studio lolo said...

I came here via Ces's blog. I'll keep you and Jack in my prayers. That's how he'll find his way home...on a wing and a prayer! I believe he'll come back to you :)

Oh Anony! I'm so so sorry. I had indoor cat once who was snooping around the backyard when a group of cats came running through. My cat ran off with them but was back a few days later because she was not used to being wild. I hope so much that will true of Jack also.

Sending good thoughts your way.

aww jack is indeed so beautiful. i came in from the posty of ces and i pray jack finds his way home soon!

how nice to hear from pierriette..

i am somewhat relieved by your confidence that you will see and easily recognize jack again. would he fly to you, anon, when he sees you? or be charmed by a treat?

i will rest more easily when i know you all are reunited. such is the power of the blogs, which is another way of recognizing the power of friendship, in the same way that a dandilion breaks through a crack in the cement....

Jack will be lost in space and we will look for him in our space ship.

Thankyou so much Ces for dedicating your IF post to Jack! I gulped when seeing Illustration Friday's topic as being 'worry'! A media release was sent to all stations. Everything has been covered and all we can do now is look at the top of trees and put his inside cage up into the main one in our garden.

Thanks MerlinPrincesse, Jack has become important to a lot of people - this blog began because of Jack opening eyes to the Bird World!

Thanks for taking the time to comment Studio Lolo and for thinking of us :) I also believe Jack will be found ... eventually.

Hello Perriette :) Jack was quite feral when he came to us and we're hoping he returns before the same happens again! My only worry is Jack having a scrap with Rainbows when contending to be accepted into a flock, then being caught by a cat because injured!

Thanks for commenting AtomicVelvetSigh! Also, for your kind thoughts :)

Jack has a red collar unlike all the other lorikeets with green ones here, KJ :) There's also that leg band which we didn't remove for an instance just like this one! I like your creative visualisation :)

I like hugs and kisses Miladysa! We'll be out the door again any minute with our heads turned upwards into the clouds. I think Jack would be having a rage eating the blossoms from the tops of gum trees but would also be afraid at night. He's lost and we need to find him instead of the other way around...

Thankyou Belmattrons! Your help is much appreciated and I can't look that far out ;)

Out the door, the weather's turning!!! *flutter*

When you mentioned a tragedy in an earlier post, I thought immediately of Jack. We are sending him vibes (and you too) all the way from Oklahoma City.

oh dear! i do hope he comes home soon and your family is all back together safe again! hugs from Rat and Valgal

I do hope he finds his way back home.

I suspected some would guess the tragedy was to do with Jack, Debra Kay. Jack means the most to many who visit this blog and he's the reason many come back to learn about Aussie birds! He is the most loved and also the best looking! At least there is still hope :)

Thankyou Rat and Valgal! The house feels empty without Jack screaming at us to share our dinner at dinnertime. There is also a lot less singing and whistling going on. Especially when the Children's Shows are on the television in the afternoons. I miss him stealing my Ribena Juice.

Thankyou for your wishes Deb! They all add up :)
