The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia's largest living bird of prey and said to be the King of Australian Skies! It reaches up to 1.5 meters in length and has a wingspan up to 2.5m. Although they spend little time maintaining their territory, they will advertise their presence by flying at high altitudes and gliding along the boundaries of their range.

This Wedge-tailed Eagle was seen by the Harbour of Sydney, Australia! The first image has been lightened from a silhouette. I have submitted this post to SKY WATCH FRIDAY
And I guess each an everyone of us will feel great about you submitting this to SWF because not only the sky is great but colours are deep, vivid and fantastic!
Thanks Quintarantino, last week my other blog was submitted with grey colours of lots of dark and dreary rain. Time for a lift!
For some reason the images are not appearing for me :[ Perhaps there is a problem with blogger? Will try again tomoz.
Goodnight Anon
Oh that's no good Miladysa, perhaps there is high traffic at the moment Heehee - see you tomorrow ;)
Tsup*!* Lucky you ... I have a pair of these gorgeous birds in our area. The other birds always let me know when the eagles are flying over as they all go quiet and statue like with heads upturned to the sky ... no doubt their little legs are shaking too. Usually by the time I get outside with the camera they have surfed high on a thermal wave. *!*
Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! I know just what you mean! The birds go quiet with heads upturned but by the time have camera, the eagle is either a speck or there are too many trees blocking a clear image. They are very good at swooping behind the trees ... ;)
Ah, there's nothing like a nice large highway vulture! Snacking on the remains of a truck impaired Roo!
Actually, when we were up at Lake Mac I actually saw a Wedgie snatch a fish out of the shallows of the lake. I'd never heard of a Wedgie fishing before, I felt rather lucky to see it.
HAHA, they are excellent at cleaning up the roadways G3TFilms! Their diet reflects the available prey and there are (supposed) to be plenty of fish at Lake Mac and maybe not so many rabbits or roos. There are a fair few other eagles it could have been, I had to lighten the top image above to fully identify because silhouettes can look very similar - even if there is a wedge-tail there. The White-bellied Sea Eagle looks similar… I photographed a fishing Australian Hobby at the Lakes last week to be posted later ;)
its a GREAT GREAT photo anon!!!
:o) a magnificent bird!!!
:) Oh no, I saw it from 15 metres away, it was a Wedgie. My two main childhood homes were inside the Kosciuszko National Park and in the sheep farming belt of the Monaro where Wedge-tails are all too common. My mates would supply a well aim bagging if a mis-recognised one.
gorgeous! I've been hoping to capture some of the hawks that fly around here but haven't been able to yet.
Thanks Simon, it's always exciting to photograph such a great bird in flight :)
I believe you G3TFilms! Can't have your mates bagging you for ... a Wedgie's snack? HAHA
Thankyou Diane Vogel Ferri! Good luck with your hawks ... it will happen in time if you're looking out for them with a camera :)
Oh my goodness! Those are amazing.
Can it fart?
I want you to answer me faster.
I think this is an outstanding offering to SWF.
Egads!! You did an outstanding job on this post... congrats on such a fantastic job!
The Rocky Mountain Retreat
Great series of the eagle
Thanks for your comment SandyCarlson :)
It can indeed fart, BoiledEggInADeckchair! Why the rush? Looking for a fast thermal wave to ride upon?
Thankyou very much Fishing Guy :)
WHAAA! Don't be alarmed Michele! There is plenty of prey to avoid the Eagle from chewing on a Rocky Mountain Girl ;)
Thankyou TommyV!
Very great shots! So wonderful!
My SWF is now posted, too! You can check it out here:

Flying high on a wing in a great SW photo.
Pop over and see Belvoir Castle Gardens skies.
Thanks Jenn, I'll fly over soon :)
HAHHA, the prize is having taken the photographs without a dark blur against the sky KJ! Of course if I EVER fly to New England we will share chocolate cake. Lots of it! I might not be able to fly back ... :)
The Wedge-tailed Eagle is indeed very magestic Ida :)
Thanks Imac, there's no other way to fly :) Belvoir Castle Gardens sounds exotic!

You're welcome OldWomTigely, I mean Tom ;) It was a pleasure to give you a surprise and thanks for hosting Sky Watch! BOO! Hahhaa
Thankyou so much T.R.! Please visit again soon :)
That's right, lucky me Anne-Berit ;)
What a beautiful bird, Anon!!! I had problems yesterday seeing images.... There were only little squares with small red x.... blah! I would not let Merlin and Mademoiselle near that bird.. *glurp* It would eat them... Though maybe a Hellcat would defense itself...hehhehe... Should I call Hellcat and Tinkerbell?
Wow! What a beauty and what a wingspan! I love how slender its wings are -- does it do quick aerial maneuvers? It looks part hawk part sea bird! Great job with the Sky Watch contribution. :)
What a breath taking series. Carnivore that I am, I adore the birds of prey as well as the waddling parrot types. Of course, the martins are back now for spring, and watching them chase mosquitios is pretty cool too. Ok, Ok, I love them all. There.
Isn't it beautiful MerlinPrincesse! King of Australian Skies, apart from Jack who uses the inside air instead :) NO please don't call those two HORRIBLE cats; although ... Jack and Wedgie working together could be interesting ;)
Hello Melissa! It manoeuvres behind trees quite well when I'm trying to take a photo, but appears to do more gliding when in open sky :) Thanks!
HAHA, I can tell you love visiting Debra Kay :)
Wow those are some great shots of the bird in flight puts mine to shame
WOW! This is just fantastic shots! I love them all, but the last one is stunning!
WoW! I would love to take eagles shot like this. Last Firday my husband and I went for a walk in the neighbourhood and we saw an eagel. But it it was to far away so the pic was no good. (A new camera??? YEEEEES!)
There are a lot of eagles, hawks, falcons and raven here where I live. I love these birds so I have to buy me a new and better camera...
Petunia
WOW that is one hell of a bird! (just testing to see if I can leave a comment...) but it IS amazing, and good luck with the picture :D
PS:- Hurrah! Hooray! I can comment! I canIcanIcanIcan! :D
These birds of prey are amazing.
We visitied our local raptor sanctuary recently, and were able to get a real close up look at these birds. While they only keep those which cannot be released back into the wild, it is good to see this one of yours flying free.
Something very special about these photographs Anon, even though they are stills you get the feeling that you are actually watching the moving bird in slow motion.
Excellent photographs and a demonstration of fine skills by both the Eagle and Ms Anon :-D
fantastic catch, excellent.
Great shots!
Lilli&Nevada, it's an accomplishment to photograph ANY bird in flight and be able to tell what it is from the photograph - I'm sure yours is fantastic :)
Thankyou Pernille'sTingOgTang, the last one was lucky ;)
HAHHAAA, I always ask myself if I need a new camera if a bird is too far for a decent image, Petunia :) Go and buy that camera!
HURRAH you CAN comment Bird! That's more than TwoCANs Heehee! Nice to see you here again :)
If it wasn't for zoos, not so many would know what raptors looked like, and you're right how it feels better seeing others in the wild, CrazyCow :)
Thankyou Miladysa :) The Wedge-tailed Eagle went to do a bow but is accidently soaring again ;)
Thanks Daniel J Santos! I have claws Hhaahaa.
Thanks John :)
anon, will you need to wear a paper bag over your head if we meet for chocolate cake?
How do you think I could eat chocolate cake through a paper bag, KJ? You'll have to wear one instead! Don't worry, I'll feed you through a straw ... no greater compliment than being fed by a bird especially if it tastes like chocolate cake! Hhehheee
Nice. That is awesome.
Thankyou, ForThePeople :)
