Nankeen Kestrel Sky Watch

The Nankeen Kestrel is the smallest falcon found in most areas of Australia. Prey is often located by hovering a short distance above the ground on rapid wing-beats, using its fan-shaped tail as a rudder and keeping its head and body still. This one was directly above; I might have been the prey!

This Nankeen Kestrel was seen above a Northern Beach in Sydney, Australia. Watch for this bird in motion film tomorrow! I have submitted this post to SKY WATCH FRIDAY!

Beautiful photographs of this bird in motion.

How did you get this Kestrel to be flying around only for you?
What goodies did you show him?
And let me finish saying these are perfect stunners!

Thankyou AbrahamLincoln :)

HAHA, very funny question Quinttarantino! I was wearing a warm jacket with a fur collar ;) Thanks!

perfect shots! When you realize how perfect everything and tilt your head back and laugh at the sky....

Caroline said...

What staggeringly gorgeous photos!

Did you stagger to take them looking up like that?

Anonymous said...

Hhehee, wait until film motion tomorrow Imac!

Thanks JeFj&NoVa :)

I WAS laughing PrettyLifeOnline ... when not nervous about the Kestrel diving then grabbing my fake fur collar ;)

Thanks Caroline :) I hardly staggered ... most of the time I stood very still with the Nankeen Kestrel hovering above. It's wings hardly moved but as you can see, his head tilted with inspection!

Pretty pictures. Beautiful bird of prey. Congratulations

Each one a great capture.. these Kestrals are great birds to watch hunting... when I was 15 or so I found one that had hurt it's wing... it stayed with me a few months then went about its way... never forgot it.

Gorgeous photos, gorgeous bird *!*

can I be rudely curious please?

Thankyou Luiz.ramosforest :)

Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie and thankyou! I DO need a coffee!!! I'll sip a coffee while you sup a tea! You may be rudely curious, heehee ;)

Bimbimbie said...

Tsup*!* thank you ... just how gigantic is your camera lens tsup*?*

Anonymous said...

Tsup*!* Is THAT all Bimbimbie, it's a pleasure :) I have a non expensive camera with brilliant ultra zoom that combines a 12X zoom lens with good quality! You can also purchase an additional even more powerful lens if needed. However, my Canon PowerShot S3 IS won't last too long living next to the salty ocean and there are other (more expensive) cameras I'm keeping my eye on once it seizes up with rust ;) In the meantime it suits what I need a camera for! Tsup*!*

PS: I don't like lugging around one of those cameras that need a forklift to hold the lens up!

The best yet Anon!

Is Sky Watch Friday a competition?

Anonymous said...

Heehee, I was very happy with these photos Miladysa :) No competition, just an appreciation of looking skywards on Fridays ;)

Anonymous said...

Wow, these are really awesome photos! I love them all.

Bimbimbie said...

Tsup*!* Hahaaa what did you think I was going to ask, tis I not that gt3 film man ;)

I've sort of been spoilt by my darling chosen one. He heard me bemoaning that I couldn't get close enough with my camera. And has just bought the Canon 450D for me? but I think it's going to be his for me to borrow lol I took one look at all those dials and probably went 10 shades of pale. I think it's time I looked around for an on line course or something to help me move off my safety blanket setting of automatic programme of my camera. Tsup *!*

What a wonderful photos. I get a lot of sky when I try to do this.

SandyCarlson said...

Just marvelous! The effect of light on the wings is marvelous.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Sherry!

Tsup*!* Tsup*!* You are a spoilt Bimbimbie with an over 12 megapixel camera! I'll swap but your Darling Chosen One wouldn't let me ;) Most people feel the same way you are with a new camera. The best way to gain confidence is to take LOTS of photos! Remember how it was not that long ago when we took photos where you couldn't erase the duds? Those days are long gone HAHHAAA ;)

Fishing Guy, cropping can also do wonders if don't have the zoom! ;)

Thankyou Sandy Carlson, the time of day was just right for the light to be in the correct direction!

Tsup *!* I'm having to sleep with my little camera tucked under my wing just in case my dco decides to hide it from me lol

before I go, did you hear the ABC are re-screening Parrots of Australia tomorrow afternoon at 4pm ... too many cranky birds complained about the stuff up they made with the missing sound. Hooray for cranky birds ;) bye Tsup *!*

Anonymous said...

Tsup*!* You must have a very proud and well feathered breast to be tucking a 450D under your wing Bimbimbie! Hhehheee.

Exaltation of larks! So it wasn't just my new telly and QLD reception that fell silent during such an important Parrot event! Hooray for cranky birds! Have a good day :) Tsup*!*

Hello KJ! WHEN have I ever forgotten you Hmmm? Once this big pile of paperwork flattens, emails slow and I get a breath during this THREE day party my Eldest is throwing, I will have the clear peace of mind to give your blog the focused attention it deserves :) Thankyou KJ, these are my Friday Skywatching friends they are looking up into the sky and not at me! I'll see you at yours soon. Heehee ;)

I saw that face Simon!

Oh no! I agree, this post is the best, but tomorrow will be better OnediaHayesSylvest ;)

Thankyou G3TFilms :) I don't even have mouse coloured hair! However might wear my fake fur hooded jacket more often when stalking birds of prey! Might even collect them... the hood worn that day wasn't even mousey coloured but might have appeared as a small mottled kitten...

Fabulous Flutters from you ElizT!

i am not feeling neglected, anon. i am quite filled and content with your hellos and tsups. it's just, you know, if you get super popular, then, uhm, maybe you won't have time and i would, ahem, understand of course, but hmmm, gee, i've grown accustomed to you....

This must be the best SWP this week. I just love birds like this, is it a type of a Hawk ???

And at once my mind started to sing "The spirit of the hawk" from Rednex... listen to it on you tube !!

well done....great shots!!

Hello and *Tsup*!* again KJ! Give us a (((hug!))), it's not every day of the week I publically keep my head in the clouds, only on Skywatch Fridays :)

They can be difficult to identify when in the air Neva because often only a silhouette. Thanks ;)

OH thanks Anemone :) Another name for the Nankeen Kestrel is "Sparrowhawk", so I guess it's also a hawk but certainly from the Falcon Family!

Thanks Scotty Graham :)

What a beautiful series of such a majestic flight. Hey Anon, I thought about you last night as I saw some old drawings of mine. I had a drawing for the parasite series which I never posted and this was the caption:

"Rudy Turnstone - Arenaria interpres, circumpolar in high arctic, migrates to antipodes, 9 inches... Acanthocirrus Retrirostris (a type of tapeworm) parasite the barnacle Balanos Balanoides and reach maturity on the intestines of wading birds such as the turnstones which feed on the barnacles."

I remember you posted about the ruddy turnstones when you were away.

Anonymous said...

Tsup*!* Oh dear, you're SHRINKING Bimbimbie! Or was that a Fricken Fairy Fleeting? Hhehheeee

That's right Inkivääri, I'm a Wicked Old Witch! Mwhahahhaa
};-}

Thankyou Ces! I missed your conversation but you're making up for lost voice even if describing an ewwwwy gooooowy tape worm! There will be more Ruddy Turnstones later but keep your Arenaria interpres away from them please! Hhehheheee :)

Nice flight photos. Technically is not easy... I have yet to get a good flight shot of this bird.

I was lucky to photograph this Kestrel sitting quietly for few minutes for some close up shot at Coogee Beach.
