Choking?
No, just cracking a shell open...
... then washing the contents.
Swallowed already?

The Bar-tailed Godwits rapidly probe their long bills into the bottom of shallow water finding food. Their bills are rubbery and flexible at the tip, allowing opening the tip of its bill in the mud or sand, whilst keeping the rest of its bill closed!

Breakfast time! Good morning ... ;)
Good morning to you Anon - I'm just about off to bed - I think lol
I do like this characterful bird - he is growing on me with every appearance he makes! And what a clever laddie he is too :-D
I had an attempted at capturing the birdsong in our garden today. Will try and post something over the weekend :-D
Good evening to you Miladysa! Sipping my first coffee ;) I have a liking for this long legged and spindle billed fellow too! How exciting - Bird Song from your backyard SOON! It will make my weekend :)
Ah, last time I saw a bar-tailed godwit.....sounds like a good tall tale.
HAHA, you're right Debra kay! I saw a Bar-tailed Godwit flying with a pink elephant the other day :)
I saw that too.
Hhehhee, wasn't the elephant funny looking with the Bar-tailed Godwit hanging from its tail, BoiledEggInADeckchair! Eating egg sandwiches at the same time; you were lucky to fly off the pieces of bread to tell your tale ;)
Tsup*!* That's very clever to to prevent a meal of salty silt flowing down the beak with the tasty morsel it's just fished out Tsup *!*
Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! The chef at a local resturant had less sense with the seafood last week! No birds are bird-brained :) HAHHAA
I like it
You know, if this Godwit would go to a restaurant the bill would be smaller... actually, now I think about it, the Godwit would make a great restaurant dish; ht ebeak would give you something to hold onto as you nibbled away... Mmmm, fresh Bar-served Godwit!
I also like it TommyV :)
First you devise a way to cheapen a meal with the Godwit's presence, then you want the food served ON the bird, closely exasperated to extreme eating the very Godwit itself!?! Go eat a proper lunch G3TFilms with no liquids included!
Thanks for putting these pics up Anonybird, I'm very excited because you have helped me positively identify the two birds I saw on saltmarsh at the weekend! I'd been puzzling over them as my field guides implied I shouldn't be seeing them but since looking at these pics and looking on some birders forums I know that there are currently bar tailed godwits along the estuary where I was walking, possibly resting on their way to the summer nesting grounds. I hadn't realized that some birds migrate so late! I am chuffed to bits, absolutely chuffed :D
Unfortunately my bill isn't so flexible as to keep the liquid out ;) And unfortunately I only go sifting in amber streams flowing fastly from fermenting factories.
Wait... no I don't... I haven't had a liquid lunch in years. I guess in future I should choose to have something other than the chicken for lunch?
Ohhh that's great Bird - it's very exciting when solving an identification by finally feeling positive about it! There's only two others it could have been here and that's a Black-tailed Godwit without the bars but black tail; and the Hudsonian Godwit which has an upturned beak as well as black tail :)
Ewwww, I used to have to walk past a fermenting factory each morning on the way to work G3TFilms. It puts you right off with a scent like that every morning! CHICKEN!?! *sigh*
Ooh, just like chopsticks!
What a great bird and those beaks are incredible.
They are just like chopsticks Ces! Made from bamboo :)
I also think the same Caroline :)
