Look at me!

You think he's talking to you? He's talking to his own reflection!

Our Magpie-larks are actually Giant Monarch Flycatchers, only associated to magpies with their former name and skirmishing with Australian Magpies. Scientific name is Grallina cyanoleuca . You might know them as Peewees ;)

Must've been quite frustrating for this little guy! Though he knew the other one was REALLY excited to see him - nothing ever happened... Bummer!
Well spotted! Cheers, Klaus

HAHHHAAAA, the other one was REALLY excited Klaus! Hhehhee

We don't get them here but in when I was up your way they used to always go for their reflections on the rear window of the car. I think in that particular case it was more a territorial thing as several would attack the window at once. They would hit the window and slide down it leaving long streaks of bird poop all over the window.

HAHA, charming image Alan! It's true, this male spent a week doing the same to all the windows of the house, boats and cars! However the female who only showed sometimes didn't! Her job was to gather the odd treat to take back to a mud-nest by the river ;)

How do you know it wasn't the bird in the reflection doing the flirting?

PS. I see you've taken up doing Australian tourist photo's now :)

Hello G3TFilms!!!! We missed you :) I don't know that for sure, just perceive it that way before the Earth slips into a different dimension. Every Friday I promote Sydney's skies to the world... no harm in that, so long as the same number as the pilgrims don't flock here all at once! Did you see my SPOONBILL!?!

G3T Films said...

Pilgrims? What Pilgrims? There have been pilgrims?

Anonymous said...

Hhehheeee, nothing G3TFilms :O You must be in Heaven already. Won't spoil your bliss!

G3T Films said...

Spoonbill? What Spoonbill? There have been Spoonbills?

I gotta run... well, walk slowly to another part of the house...

Stop flapping about G3TFilms, a Mythical Bird left a comment on your blog. Follow it later after ermmmm crawling. Nice to see you again :)

Haa haaa!! In that last one it looks like he's thinking, "Crap! I *AM* looking at me!" :) These are fabulous, Anon -- award winners.

HAHHHAAAA, pleased to make you laugh Melissa :) Thanks!

The wing stars are interesting, is it a useful disguise of some sort Anon?

Anonymous said...

You're mighty observant today ElizT! He could really be an American Spyjet in the last two images! I've read up on them and nothing indicates they need to appear as 'stars' during the night. I'm also not sure his feather patterning has camouflage reasoning behind it, like most. They have an extensive calling repertoire and call on wing while flying with additional exaggerated and catchy wingbeats. He's a performer who doesn't appear to remain unnoticed ;)

Maybe he is just practicing his gliding manoeuvre or is he just vain? Aren't birds silly? Silly. silly..silly birds

Anonymous said...

Birds silly Princess Pepper Cloud? Don't be a twit! Hhehee He's most probably being territorial considering wife and babies are close by ;)

Amila Salgado said...

That is one bird that I have 'ticked' off my list thanks to cricket matches seen on TV!

Nice sequence.

Anonymous said...

Hhehee, congratulations for yet another from your lounge chair Gallicissa! I only tick mine if have a (reasonably) focused photograph. You must have one very large television screen to identify some during Australian matches ;)

Amila Salgado said...

I have a small TV screen, so I had frustrating time at that to be honest. It was possible when one was focused close. I took my Pizzey out and there it was!

They always focus on the wrong birds. You must get some ladies on that job.

Anonymous said...

HAH Gallicissa, human birds watching a cricket match would be more focused upon because the show is about the game. Perhaps an Australian Nature program will give better results ;)

Caroline said...

I thought this bird was showing its bum to me...

(Sorry I've not been around much - I've not disappeared off the planet just off the computer for a bit... hope to be back in another week or so)

Hhehe, that's what you were meant to think, Caroline :) Pleased you're still on Earth!

HAHHAAAA manic laughter is contagious Lavender! The second photo cracks me up the most ;)

What a birdbrain. Hehe. A great observation Anon. It reminds me of a dog chasing its own tail or our chickens fighting with their own shadows. Actually it may symbolize advanced thinking, the bird's discovery of the mirror. Probably wondering why the reflection does not ripple, unlike their reflections in puddles of water, or do they peck on their reflections in the water? Hot and humid here. I almost went into shock.

vanity of all males is pretty evident :O lol

anon, the white markings on black wings look like monocrome fireworks to me!! how you manage to even "see" shots like this is pretty impressive.

hope you're having a good weekend. it's 90 degrees F here. i am forced to go to the beach and bob in the Atlantic ocean....

:)

What a funny photo, I was wondering how you got a pic with his legs up in the air. First glance it almost looked like he had his head stuck in a hole with his feet hanging out.

Anonymous said...

Hhhee, haven't seen them pecking at their reflection in a puddle of water Ces. You're right, it's advanced thinking because they understand nature as a priority ;)

You should try looking under some bridges at night some time LaughingWolf :O

HAH, the Magpie-lark doesn't remain unnoticed KJ. He was vying for our attention too :) I'm planning on going for a boat ride today but it depends on whether the grey sky lifts. *Sigh*

Hhheee, I love how his toes are separated in the second shot Indigo-daisy :)

laughingwolf said...

only the homeless there :(

Anonymous said...

Nice the end!!!!
You get great shots.

Anonymous said...

No vanity to be found LaughingWolf. Hey you're not laughing...

HAHA!! Thankyou Luiz Ramos :)

merlinprincesse said...

Anonymous said...

No, he's flirting his bottom to YOU MerlinPrincesse! Hhehheee :)

Maria said...

I think he has a nice backside, that's what counts. It does not matter if he is vain or not, does it?

Anonymous said...

HAHA you tell him Simon!

:( Wolf.

There's nothing wrong with vanity Maria, unless you make a fool of yourself in public like that! HAHHAAA :) He does have a nice bottom ;)
