So handsome and regal.

Bravery must go hand in hand with "handsome and regal" Annie :)

White-faced Herons are so cute, all beak and neck.

I have to ask, have you changed camera or lens lately or have you just been playing with composition. Your photos have changed over the last few posts. For the better I might add.

The pigeon photo's below are super.

They are nice birds G3TFilms! The only difference is winter lighting! Australian light is too harsh for the camera but during winter the glare is softened - especially if cloudy which it has been with all our extra rain :) Thanks!

I thought my white faced heron had stopped comming to his nest.
One evening as I was BBqing- it flew almost on top of me in the dark heading back to the nest and got such a fright that it flew away looking like a big bat in the dark-

but this morning- There he/she was!

:o)

Keep your eye out for another one Simon, between September and November! You might be able to work out whether it's a he or she ;)

poor fisherman, i see no catch :O lol

Anonymous said...

Hhehee no LaughingWolf, I didn't see him catching a fish or fish anywhere! A Pelican even flew off in disgust!

Well, just like the human fishermen then, coming home empty-handed except giving me the gulf-scent smelly clothes.

But pray, why would this be dangerous for a bird who is used to the water and the waves? Are there many incidents of birds being crushed by waves?

Anonymous said...

Hhaaa, these herons normally only fish in shallow wetlands, like tidal mudflats. They do fish on beaches and rock shelves but not right up against waves! No stinky washing from Mr Heron, Ces :)

Ces Adorio said...

He must be desperate then, fishing on the edge. What a beautiful grey color and the white face with black beak makes him look very smart.

Anonymous said...

They are smart birds Ces, and the ones around here are quite shy so have to keep a distance when photographing them :)

G3T Films said...

Hmmm... I'm not sure it's just that.

I must say though, I love the harsh Aussie light for photography. Too few countries have that special quality of light that we do. Of course, it does make a midday shoot difficult.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, I'll let you know this heron was photographed at midday in Autumn, so compared to recent pigeons and seagulls I'm being quite blinded now. Australia has very good lighting for photographing architecture, G3TFilms! Sharp and contrasty shadows!

Ces Adorio said...

We have harsh light here during the summer. I had a difficult time photographing my garden series even when it was early in the morning. I was in my pajamas still but already blinded by the sun.

Anonymous said...

Every weekend I get what I call sun blindness from photographing birds up high or near water Ces! Hhehee :) You have potential SUPER pyjamas!?! Oh, I see what you mean ;)

G3T Films said...

Just needs to be remembered that Oz trees and rocks tend to be quite architectural... it shouldn't be too hard to fit a bird in there somewhere. Although the bird might get lost a little.

Anonymous said...

Very true G3TFilms! My best shots aren't bloggable on the bird blog because of that 'lost' reason! I rather post small images for easy loading and not having the need to enlarge most times...

Ces Adorio said...

I love your birds Anon. My birds are just little dots on my pictures.

Anonymous said...

Thankyou Ces :) We see your birds in detail in your drawings!

my, this is a very civil exchange.

ERRRM thankyou for your uncivil comment KJ ;)

I like the idea of photoshopping dozens of birds into a photo and doing a 'where's wally' type post.

Anonymous said...

HAHA, go ahead G3TFilms! I'm trying to find a wally amongst hundreds of gumleaves at this very moment!

Lovely sea waves ... tell that silly heron to pull up his yellow waders before he gets wetted by the waves tsup*!*

Anonymous said...

Heehee!! Tsup*!* Tsup*!* That silly Heron had better pull himself undercover from the looks of the black clouds rolling in this way Bimbimbie! We're in for a storm!

Beautiful light in Australia! And beautiful bird! Seems to be a brave heron!
Some time ago I saw a heron in Vienna in the middle of the city at the banks of the Donaukanal. Unbelievable! Standing on the stairs that lead down to the water.
I think it thought about fishing in inusual areas, too.

I was surprised, because I had seent herons only in the lowland forests around the Danube so far.

BTW: My poor dog is ill. She was bitten by a viper at the weekend. But she is already recovering.

Have a nice day, Maria

...unusual areas....

Hmmm, interesting about the heron fishing on the banks of the Donaukanal, Maria! Maybe it's not so unusal for them to fish in new places, just less common :) That's terrible news about your dog! Snakes can be deadly but pleased she is recovering :) What sort of vipers do you have there?

Maria said...

We have adders. It was a black adder, about 60 cm long and usually eating frogs and mice. But my doggy was too curious.
Her throat is swollen and she moves only very slowly. I have a picture of her on my blog. But she is so much better today.

Anonymous said...

Goodness! That wasn't black humour like the English Show with same name, was it! We have Death Adders where my parents live, very lucky it wasn't one of those! I'll visit your blog...

I'd also like to tell everyone MerlinPrincesse's cat Merlin is not well. Please VISIT and leave your best wishes.

Maria said...

The black adder is in German "Höllenotter" and it is a kind of "Kreuzotter", the latter being more common here in Austria.
The snake's venom affects the heart and paralyzes small animals.
If the snake had injected a very large amount of its venom, it could have been life-threatening for a rather small dog as ours (13 kg), especially if the dog had not been very healthy. But our doggy seems to be a tough and healthy girl...

Maria said...

Yes, is was not DEATH ADDER ;)
Oh my god, I'm afraid again....

Anonymous said...

Your dog must be strong and healthy from all her frolicking in the Austrian Alps and your walks around Vienna! No need for further worry, she wouldn't have woken on Monday if she was bitten by a Death Adder! The vet would have given her an anti-venom for your local "Höllenotter" ;)

HAHA!! Oh good, Maria your smile has broadened :> or is that a bird's beak you have grown? Hhehhee! I must keep working now...

Have a couple of these big boys in the burbs fishing a neighbour's carp pool! No waves there except the ones caused by a cranky neighbour! Nice comments this time, like a little trip around the world. Perhaps there's an advantage to arriving late!

Good shots! Love the colors in it.
And the Heron of course! And they are a bit like us - they go where ever they stand a chance of getting food. ;)
Cheers, Klaus

Great photos, that water looks so enticing.

Oh, heron. I will not snuggle thee, but I will bask in thy beauty!! Great shots, Anon -- I love the blue and white of the waves in the background. The heron has no fear!

Hi again ANONYBIRD!! Go here. http://inmidreamz.blogspot.com/2008/07/weekend-that-was.html

Scroll to the bottom. There is a little fellow making trouble there and he has the troops thoroughly under control now.

Anonymous said...

Welcome Mosura! I'll be around for a visit later ;)

HAHA, cranky pond owners all over the world know these unwanted visitors Baino! If you're too late it would take a day to read this posts comments :O Funny how some weeks are quiet and others are the opposite!

Ah yes, the nature of survival Klaus :) Thanks - I know you like Herons :)

Just forget the wire LaughingWolf! These fellows can very easily get fishing line tangled around their lanky legs ... ;) In fact, that's a similar trick Baino's neighbour can use over their pond - lines of wire keep Herons away.

Dive in Deb! Actually, don't dive... there's lots of rocks in there! Pick a puddle :)

It IS a very brave Heron Melissa, and beautiful :) Don't bask for too long or you'll be sunburnt!

Hello Annie! I'll be over to see your little fellow soon. After COFFEE ;)

The Heron is Caroline :)

Two of my favs caught in one picture... blue ocean and blue/gray heron. I've never seen one fishing on the shore persay - only in fresh water or brackish water. Nicely done! (The beach always calls to me, but your wave action shouts out an invitation :D)

Wonderful TsDuff - you are easy to please :) Try not to jump into the waves - it's WINTERTIME! Brrrrr....
