Watch out!

King Jack Mr Magpie is very angry about something! Not a good start, although, not many of the birds or photographs of them ARE delightful in the afternoons. Feathered friends desert me when the sun goes down and Anon's photographs are mostly dark and grainy - NOT delightful AT ALL but get used to it! ... Jack

Jack is right! Afternoon lighting is horrible and the birds seem desperate to compete for food before the sun sets. Although My Magpie is upset about something else ...

Okay, I can see his feathers are ruffled, so what's the problem?

Hmmm, can't see what that is in this post Red Mojo :)

They are strong feathers MerlinPrincesse! Mr Magpie drops them all the time, especially when he has tantrums like he is here!

could mags be upset with Mini?

I go t really stressed when the male magpie spent most of the day swooping and screaming at somthing in the tree near the nest..It went on for so long I thought he was going to die ( it was hot)... It was a Tawny frog mouth...they abandoned the nest... and are reluctant to go near the tree after 6 years of bnesting in it :O(

Mini wasn't around then, Simon :) This Mr Magpie had a good hour tantrum! Your Mr Magpie sounds like a great bully!! Maybe you should be showing the Mynas how to discourage him instead? You might have to encourage the owls back yourself, pitch a tent under the tree and not let Mr Magpie near it for a while!

you are right again anon! Mr Mags is a HUGE bully for sure!
But his 'wife" is the one that I hand feed and a wonderful mum ;o)

p.s Tawny frog mouths are often called owls but they are not... they are of the Nightjar family.
(I did not know this until I was corrected by a world leading ornathologist in Coto Donana Spain!)

I almost looked it up before writing it! So I stayed up all night with a Nightjar then ... whatever that is HAHA!! I'll look it up now ...

Well .... my book has 'Frogmouths' as separate birds between 'Barn Owls' and 'Nightjars' but are listed under 'owls' in the index! No wonder Aussies are confused Hhehheeee.

AHA your friend is wrong but so was I! Owls are from the Families Strigidae or Tytonidae, Frogmouths from the Family Podargidae and Nightjars from the Family Caprimulgidae! There are also 'Owlet-Nightjars' which have features of both nightjars and frogmouths which are from the Family Aegothelidae. I have forgotten all the names already ... :)

We should be talking about Magpies though!
