The whole family were going to attend Mini's 'release' to ensure she was protected by the Magpies in particular. We had also grown very fond of her. HOWEVER, a couple family members were running late for the big event. It had stopped raining and Mini was due for another feed. Like usual, I allowed her to sit wherever she pleased to receive worms. She gobbled her last then gave a ...
bow ...
then curtsey. In a fleeting second I wished she right now flew away; at the very same moment didn't want her to leave. Then an instant later - Mini Minor was gone.

To a tree ...
It's so exciting, sad, happy when you release a wild one back to the wild.
When I released my barred owl, I continued to feed it for some time by placing thawed frozen rats out on the top of the clothes pole and it would swoop down and take them. At night, when I was walking home alone through the woods, it would swoop down from behind on my head and life up at the last second and fly over my head--it was strange, a little scary, eerie. I couldn't hear it, but could somehow feel it coming.
oh mini, so sad. That's a funny curtsey! Did you see what happened beyond the tree? Did she unite with her new family?
and what family will be taking her in, anyway? do you think you will see her again, anon?
i hate these kind of love stories. and of course, it turns out i am writing one along similiar lines!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now I'm really crying! *supersupersnif*
Bravo!! Encore!!! Good show!! Sniff, sniff. I hate goodbyes ...
Aww. I'm sure she'll be alright. I had three little noisy myna birds in a hanging pot outside my bedroom window. They were there for about 2 weeks before all three just popped off into the Grevillea. They all hung around squarking for a couple of weeks afterwards. They looked very defenceless but were actually quite resourceful. Job well done Anon!
*sob*
Good luck MM!
Like any mother all that is left to do now is to sit back and relax.
Here's looking at you kid - both of you ;)
well I have to agree with everyone! :o) its kinda sad... but to know that you have done the best and right thing!
Barred owl! how very COOL! they are quiet.. owls :o)
Do we know what bird Mini is yet???
Good riddance! pfft!
I have been leaving worms under the gazebo for Mini, Mary Stebbins Taitt :) Once I stayed awake all night with an injured Tawny Owl but it died in my arms :( It was uncanny the moment Mini left ... like she read my thoughts!
That is a funny curtsey Red Mojo! She still doesn't know whether she is a boy or girl yet :) More tree posts to come ...
I'm not counting on seeing her again unless it's when she's grown KJ! The bird territories here are very clearly marked and her kind isn't included.
This is a happy event MerlinPrincesse! Sort of ... *snif*
I also don't like 'goodbyes' Melissa. The English language doesn't have a proper word for 'goodbye for now only'. We have the slang 'later'!
I'm mostly sure she will be alright too Baino! She was at the perfect age to venture out, strong enough to fly high, quick enough to duck, knew about weather and how to find food. I'm pleased she chose the moment to leave herself, which is why I wished she did in that split second. It would have awful trying to make her leave ...
Sit back, relax and worry Miladsya! HAHHAHAAAA. I am still a little worried but that's natural for a Mum :)
It's even more appropriate for a bird to be as free as bird Modroom! AND eat worms! Heehee
We will be working out what Mini was together Simon; there will be posts with clues :)
SCAT CAT!
Oh yes.. there is always the worry! :)
Time heals ... Miladysa :)
