Sooty Oystercatcher

Okay, they aren't really swimming, but this is as wet as it gets for the shore bird and wader.

The Sooty Oystercatcher is the only all-black shorebird in Australia. Isn't he a funny one!

All black with a tangerine beak and pink legs :-D

They look like they are on patrol.

HAHA, they did look like they were on patrol Miladysa! Marching back and forth, prying shells that dared attach themselves to the rocks ... :)

have you seen one open an oyster? they have the most amazing beak!

Watched them eat for three hours Simon! There will be a detailed post about what I couldn't manage with a knife later ;)

It must be fun to watch them crack those shells open!
Are there tons of them? because I think raw oysters are an aphrodisiac.

I saw that face Simon!

It was fun to watch Red Mojo but have had sun stroke since ... They are usually spotted on their own or in pairs like these being the only two this time. However in Autumn and mostly Winter, I'll be keeping an eye out for a flock of twenty or more! They like it only where there are lots of rocks on the coast, like this location :)

What a beauty! I love the color of beak and eyes -- they stand out so vividly against the soot. At first I thought it said "scooty" and I was thinking he was going to scoot around somehow ...LOL! I love the penguin!! I've seen a few hawks and a couple of seagulls (I think their GPS is way off), but not much of note up here. It's wintry still in VT so there isn't as much spring friskiness going on.

Oh NO! Smoking is illegal on our beaches but how the Smoking Police could get down the cliffs before the carrot was gone I do not know Captain Modroom9!

They are natural models in the bird world with striking colouring Melissa! We are having Summer now when it was Spring during the Summertime with extra rain! The birds are even confused ...

I do not know either, neither of us do not know.

What a little stunner!

They look like those little 'weighted' plastic birds that dip their beaks into a glass of water . . nope, not smoking funny cigarettes .. you know what I mean?

Anonymous said...

Interesting, different and unusual Debra Kay!

YES Baino they DO! What was the purpose for those red beaked dipping glass birds? Have a fuzzy image of tapping the head and off they dipped .... but why? Were they like umbrellas? Do they still exist? Did they originate from the Easter Show?

Carrots! Good for the eyes too!

But they have black things attached to them Joy Eliz! You are looking lovely in your avatar :)

Joy Eliz said...

Carrot-birds!
And thank you!

Okay, Carrot-birds they are until you witness them catching an oyster! :)

I wonder if this was the bird that gathered the oysters I ate the other day?

Couldn't be Ces, your oysters had oysters in them!
