Crested Terns form large, noisy colonies on offshore islands, often with other terns or gulls. They are also widespread from the south coast of Africa north to Asia and east to Polynesia.

Oh CRESTED - I thought you said 'crusted'. Which I was going to reply "they don't look crusty" But never mind because I just read it wrong. hhhmmmpff.

They look like old men going bald on top Joy Eliz! That's a bit 'crusty' ... ;)

Joy Eliz said...

Yes they do! I couldn't think of what they call that hairstyle - The 'wrap-around'?
How upper crusty!

I couldn't think of what they call that hairstyle either Joy Eliz. Thought of Uncle Festa but he was completely bald! Maybe one of the male Twits can enlighten us ;)

I'm callin' it the 'wrap'.
And I'm stalking you - Right now!
creep, creep, creep.

The 'wrap' with blue-black colour highlights! It wouldn't look so good grey. You are practising to be a Bird Stalker Joy Eliz! I MUST have my morning COFFEE!

They look a bit of a rough - yet kindly - lot to me.

Diamond Geezers ;-D

I LOVE that first photograph, looks like one of them is doing a bellyflop!

"Diamond Geezers"! Miladysa! They also remind me a bit of barbers - the old fashioned type perhaps in the mafia! That bellyflopping bird was the only one who enjoyed the water within three whole hours!

you know what they say about tern relationships?

One good tern.....

A crested anything always makes me smile. Maybe we should all put crests on ourselves and walk around and make people smile.

HAHA very funny Simon - there were a lot of them about!

Those people are called punks Debra Kay! Try skipping instead :)

RED MOJO said...

I think they're cu cu cu cu cute. Well, skipping isn't that much fun!

Hhehheee, they are cute Red Mojo! Up to 48cm's of cute, so not that small. But skipping looks funny!!!

A terning pointe perhaps?

Anonymous said...

Hhehheeee, that would look funnier than skipping Simon!

I love terns! And this one splashing around looks to be having a great time! The other ones seem to ignoring him. LOL!

Thanks for the mallard clarification. And the terns and oyster catchers. The arctic tern is one my favorite summer visitors. And the black oystercatchers look a lot like this sooty.

You're right Melissa, the others had no interest at all in having a splash! They aren't even wearing breeding plumage with crests that come forward covering their eyes. Just not interested in anything ... ;)

Mallards can be confusing all over the world Steve. At least we know ours only travel via boat or plane ;) We also get Arctic Terns who do travel on their own - they have neater hair-dos and many migrate to South America among other places. The Sooties below are sedentary :)

Great photos! I love the tufty bit on the top of their heads that makes them look like they just got up and have not had a chance to comb yet ; )

Welcome back AKiteRises! The terns do need combs for those mops on their heads :)
