Little Penguin

There is a colony of Little Penguins, or Fairy Penguins as we call them close by. Although have had plenty of opportunities to photograph the colony mostly at night, haven't done so out of respect for the little guys who have a difficult time living on Sydney's North Harbour. I'm a Backyard Buddy. Found mostly in South Australia, this colony is the only known breeding colony on mainland NSW and has been listed as endangered.

I can't have a pool party without the penguins!

There are eleven species of penguin that mainly visit Tasmania and South in Australia. The Little Penguin and smallest of all penguins, breeds in burrows on the Sydney foreshore and is the only Australian resident penguin.

This little guy is being cared for in rehabilitation and part of the Little Penguin Recovery Program, so he is my blog Star.

He has an injured bill and is moulting ...

... which doesn't make him appear any less cute!

Kissy-kissy! No! That's not a suggesion of name. I just find him very very cute... What about... mmm.... errr... I will come back after Supper. Maybe Clo and Gene will have some ideas! :))))

Hheheee, don't take too long with your supper MerlinPrincesse (which will now taste like fish - which IS brainfood), or all the best names will be taken ;) I like the name 'Torpedo'!

We could find a FRENCH name... Hhehehe! :) Seeyalater!

In that case, you will also have to give us lessons with translation and pronounciation MerlinPrincesse! Haahaa.

So cute. I remember seeing hundreds waddling up the sand at Philip Island some time ago and wondering why they make it so difficult for themselves nexting in the dunes. They're just gorgeous. I hope we can keep this little colony together. "Torpille" (torpee) is Torpedo in French!

This colony has been struggling to survive for a long time Baino with around 60 pairs but need more Backyard Buddies to ensure their growth! Phillip Island was (maybe is still) famous for their colony! They ARE gorgeous and I'm counting "Torpille" as your choice of name :)

Pingoo!

I love them. A molt really takes it out of a bird.. its almost as risky as hatching!

A bit a trivia- Had a friend who owned a house in Manly and he wanted to develop it- he was not allowed to because the penguins came up through a small pipe ( in the retaining wall), and would sleep under his house!

OK! Pizz was really gooood! Yummmy! Here are the few names we have thought about...
Clo has thought about Skippy.. Hhehehe! (A hero of our childhood)... Personnaly, I would love the name Esther Williams... well...
And we also thought of Eugene, Billy, BillyBob, Hill Billy, Octave, Edgar, Flipper, WHippet, SuperPinguin. And others too that happily we've forgotten... :)

Wow, merlinprincesse has a lot of suggestions. How about Flibertyjibit? or Steve?

How'd I get mixed up in this? But sure, I'll lend my name to this little guy.

Pinoo, Simon! I've heard that name for a penguin before ;) Also think I know where your friend’s house is HAHA.

Pizz as in yummy lollies MerlinPrincesse? I was going to make a Poll from reader's suggestions, but there are too many already! Tell Clo penguins don't have pouches heehee. Flipper is a dolphin! HAHHAAAAA

Flibertyjibit sounds like a good name for a FROG Red Mojo! Hhehheheee

Think Steve is exuberant about his name being suggested! Can't see any further choice .... :)

Jellybean is the only name that doesn't already belong to my readers KJ :) Okay, beaky is how some of the birds have been described but the little fellow only has half a one!

you probably do know where it is Anon

(whispered) thats what's scary!!! we probably walk past each other and never know it! ahahahahahahah

he looks cute whatever his name is...

On second thought, it is a little peculiar for Anonymous to be giving out names on Bird Anonymous. I would think that on this site the birds should be able to expect, well, you know, anonymity.

non-anon. that's my vote. it came to me in the hot tub, and the sky parted just afterwards....

ElizT said...

Is this the same as our Little Blue?
I would call him Nigel.

Have you ever wondered if it would be scarier if you did know Simon? Mwhahahhhaaaa

He IS a cutie Caroline ;)

Peculiar is my middle name Steve and you're right, we should respect their anonymity! I'll cross the name 'Steve' off the list. Heehehheee

Non-anon is the opposite to what Steve wants KJ! We should throw you both into the pool to sort it out! Or a hot tub HAHA.

Probably Eliz T! They have a blue colour and ARE also found in New Zealand :) Nigel is a good name; hello and welcome back!
