Australasian Grebe

Have had troubles photographing Grebes because they are very camera shy; diving underwater or hiding amongst the shadows. This is the first time I've photographed one wearing its bright Summer breeding colours. Former photographs were taken during duller Winter.

Errrrmmmm not as elegant as the Black Swan below!

Grebes has always fascinated me, maybe because they are thrown in with 'ducks', cute but always swim away.

really SUPER SHOTS!!!

in answer to your question re spain:- my bird list is about 5 days woth. Others got well over 100. I would not count a bird unless I was confident I got a good look.

I only posted about Spain becasue it will be an article in the Cumberland Bird Observers Club magazine and I wanted Maalie to proof read it.. ( it need some improvement)

Let me tell you the photo opertunities there were incredible!!!

Thanks Simon :) I understand about your not counting if not getting a good look, I don't count unless a clear photograph heeehee. On the weekend I took over a thousand photographs but probably only added about half a dozen new sightings of which half were blury!

woah! 1000!! :o)

there were some incredible photo oppertunities in Spain- around castles and swamps!

1145 actually ... hahhahaaa. The age of digital cameras! I did't even try to photograph a bird when working with film. Castles and swamps were included more so back then ;)

Help Anon:- I have captured a King Parrot which was hit by a car. Right wing is broken bu the bird seems in good spirits.

I have placed it in a cage with a fern frond, and some other bits of green, water and parrot mix.

Now that it is dark I have placed a towel over the cage.

I will take it to the vet in the morning.

Is there anything else I should do? It's quite mature but not a full adult.

Oh dear poor parrot, Simon. I can only add to be sure the cage is in a warm and quiet spot, the parrot being injured needs warmth and parrots are also easily stressed, especially from sound. If you have an empty tissue box, it might like to go inside to sleep if the wing can maneuver the opening - a bigger shoebox on its side placed into the cage might be better. Good luck in the morning!

ok....i will place it in the walk-n robe.....away from tv and stuff.. thanks.. I really hope he will be "here" in the morning. :o/

A walk-in-wardrobe is perfect Simon! I forgot to mention putting some toilet paper or tissues in the shoe or tissue box so it can 'nest' for the night. Mini spent her first week in a wardrobe but it wasn't a walk-in one and she didn't have a cage HAHA. Again, good luck for the morning :)

i love the neck--so elegant and fashionable...

:)

Anonymous said...

Yes, her neck is the right length too KJ! Not like the swans which is a little stretched in relation to a humans' :)

It looks like it is bleeding, like someone shot the grebe.

That's HORRIBLE Ces! Luckily you aren't a female Grebe :)
