Ruddy Turnstone

It's a Ruddy Turnstone! The Ruddy Turnstones migrating to Australia breed in east Siberia and west Alaska, moving through south-east Asia then south to Australia. They visit from about September to May and like to … you guessed it – turn stones!

They are noisy and quarrelsome but a privilege to see because threats on passage include economic and social pressures such as wetland destruction, change, pollution and hunting!

I see from the passport stamp that they had a stopover in Indonesia. I thought you are on holiday?

Some birds island hop to the east coast and to New Zealand, probably returning north again via east Asia, Ces. I am on holiday, leaving here on Monday morning, today is Sunday but have much packing to do ... in a flap. There is also a teenage party which begins in an hour. Will really need a holiday then :)

Oh look.. Turnstone (Arenaria Interpres). This is a small wading bird, one of two species of Turnstone in the genus Arenaria. It is now classified in the Sandpiper family Scolopacidae but was formerly sometimes placed in the Plover family Charadriidae who live next door. It is a highly migratory bird and can fly.

The Ruddy Turnstone has a varied diet including carrion, eggs, turnips and metholated spirits but it feeds mainly on a chair. It often flips over stones and other objects to get at prey hiding underneath but no-one knows how it knows there is something underneath but they seem to.

HAHA, have YOU been drinking metholated spirits Professor Fufu-u? They turn over stones to find insects, crustaceans, molluscs and spiders but only know they're already there if the environment is bountiful!

Apparently ours [next door] have orange legs.
And they feed under Flotsam as well as stones. I don't know if he minds.

Heehee, they are the same ones as next door in New Zealand ElizT, the sun has just bleached the orange to a more yellow in the photographs :) They also turn seaweed which could probably pass as 'flotsam'!

Lovely little things. I'd like to go to Alaska some summer.
