Grasslands

The next location was in the grasslands between lagoon and beach.

No birds!

Does it look cold, because it was! Oh look ... a spot in the sky!! This expedition was disappointing, however several introduced species of birds will follow.

This is the first grassland area because had to travel to several to find a NATIVE bird! It's five minutes walk North and four minutes walk East from my computer :)

Nice and green and very restful for the eyes. They may be asleep but the snakes are there!

Too many dogs for snakes to be here Ces ... it might explain why the birds were gone too!

oooh that is so sad. bad dogs!

Bad owners! They should keep dogs on a leash. Every time Cheruboy and I thought we were alone, there would be a rustle in the bushes. We drew near to perhaps find a tiny bird or nest and WHAAAAA dog paws all over us!

Actually, the Council cleared most of the lantana which is a weed but the small birds used it for shelter and protection...

Oh I know lantanas. They are indeed prolific but they have beautiful flower clusters. In fact they are used as ground cover here. I have a lantana bush. It has beautiful flowers. Very hardy, just like a weed bush but mine is not a weed - I talk to it.

Although pretty, we curse them here Ces! Lantana is noxious, listed as a 'Weed of National Significance'. It's native to Central and South America but was brought here in the 1840s, dominating the understorey and eventually the canopy of our natives. As long as I can remember, bands of people go out on a weekly basis ridding the weed. Probably cursing too Ces :)

Oh those foreign invaders, always destroying the natives!!! Lantanas are very hardy indeed. That's a difficult task. Here locally weed of regional significance is the lily pads that choke the lakes!

OH HAHA! Why do weeds have to be so pretty!?! As you can see we don't have lily pads choking our lagoon, BUT I could go on about something else that floats around but might eventually make a post of it instead Ces :)
