Channel-Billed Cuckoo

King Jack Talking about cuckoos, not one BUT two Channel-billed ones flew in! Their beaks are nearly as large as my whole body! These two were about 66cm long! Big can be beautiful but NOT in their case! ... Jack

Their bills are REALLY 'channelled' aren't they! They migrate between August and October to Eastern and Northern Australia from New Guinea and Indonesia, leaving Australia in February or March.

Whoa! Those bills are for some serious work, arent they - amazing! What good fortune they came to visit you - and you had your camera ready - Great work! Ive never seen one of these, and Im kinda hoping this is the only time I will Tehehehee

Hhehee, this was only my second time of seeing them Lavender. The first time I thought they were exotic escapees from the zoo! It IS best they stay away (after they have been photographed) :) !!

Wow, those things look like vultures! Scary! What kind of people do they eat?
Also, please go back to my blog and tell me what you meant. :)

ow. i wouldn't wanna get bit by one of those guys. but i still think they are beautiful.

channeled beak and all. i like that it's black. tray ella-GANT.

Hah scary indeed Red Mojo! Unlike other cuckoos, the young birds don't evict the host's eggs from the nest, but grow faster, demanding all the food, thus starving the others! Seeing you have manners I will be back ;)

Black Catnapping? Turn the lights back on! They have grey plumage, although darker on their backs and wings :)

Keep your distance Jack - they look like trouble to me!

Anon - I can't believe the visitors you get to your garden!

Are you feeling better now?

We have been receiving a lot of 'unwanted' visitors of late Miladysa! Down to sneezing less than a dozen times per half hour and coughing only at night. Thank you for asking :)

They look like buzzards to me. They must be the ugliest cuckoos this side of the sun. Have they got beautiful personalities?

Anonymous said...

They do a bit Modroom but nothing like anything else that visits Australia! Tomorrow they will show their personalities or not in a film, where you can judge for yourself :)

I'll have a look and see what I think about them then.

colds suck.

Fabulous piccies of the cuckoo - I've only seen them on tv. Not at all like the ones in the clocks, eh?

See you then Modroom! hhehheee

Yup *achoo!*. I've lived in the Black Forest of Germany and their Cuckoos look a lot different from Channel-billed ones, but not the ones carved into clocks, TsDuff :)

:o)

Not too bad but they are a bit ugly for real...

Hhaha, I think they look ugly enough in the photos Simon :) We don't want everyone running away screaming from my blog!

Mummy! Mummy! There's a vulture outside!!!!

Yes, they are a bit homely looking, but I'll bet they are pretty smart for a bird.

Ahh . . biatch! I hear them but by the time I get the camera out, they're on the fly! What a coup to photograph them so clearly. I had a couple of magpies raising a cuckoo chick years ago, they had absolutely no idea that the chick running them ragged was three times their size, a different colour and looked funny! Poor exhausted parents! Well done to capture them.

Nothing to be afraid of MerlinPrincesse HAHA.

They didn't show any extra intelligence when visiting, Princesse Pepper Cloud ... they might be like elephants and have a good memory or BAH, they are just big and ugly birds!

Hhehhehheee, I did take these photos in bare feet on top of bindies in the grass and wearing something I'm sure my neighbours will talk about for years Baino! The trick is to RUN as fast as you can but stay low and run lightly so they think you are a insignificant hairy thing. I'm sure you'll get their photograph with a new camera and they seem to like it at your place :) I don't expect to see them again ;)

i was talking about his beak. it looks black to me!

Anonymous said...

OHHH his beak Catnapping! It's a pale grey but shadows tend to darken bird's colours a lot, not to mention reflection of other colours from foliage and sky ... :)

Aw! I do not like these birds. I just do not like them because of what they do to other birds. Really I should just leave nature alone.

I don't think there would be many around who DO like these birds Ces! WHAT do you do to them!?!
