There really is only one place in Sydney to photograph Pelicans and this isn't it. If you'd like to see better and more, click on the Australian Pelican Label in the sidebar! Will be back later to catch up on comments ... :)

A pelican is any of several very large water birds with a distinctive handbag under the beak belonging to the bird family Pelecanidae.

Along with the darters, cormorants, gannets, frigatebirds, and tropicbirds, pelicans make up the order Pelecaniformes. Modern pelicans are found on all continents except Antarctica. They occur mostly in warm regions, though can wear a woolly hat in colder regions. Birds of inland and coastal waters, they are absent from polar regions, the deep ocean, oceanic islands, inland South America and garden sheds.

I am simply enthralled by your Pelecanidae.

HAHHAHAA, they are big and can be scary to anything smaller than a teenager Baino! Australian Pelicans can be 1.9m high and have a wing span of 2.6m! Jurassic Park is responsible for fear from those older than teens ;)

AWWWW thanks for brightening my day also Miladysa :)

Thanks ElizT, the pelicans are also! Hhehheee

Peli Can Simon! So can turtles - the post says so!

WHAAAAAA it's Professor FuFu-u snuck up behind me :) We are also enthralled with the educational information you have provided us about Pelecanidae, particularly about the woolly hats they are known to wear in cooler seasons :)

There's just something about that baggy part of its bill that makes me want to slap it! Though I don't think the pelican would appreciate that ... hee hee. I love the way their wing feathers fan over their backs!

A Pelican could gobble you if you tried slapping it Melissa! It could parade you around in its bill-pouch only opening its bill to show people your screaming face HAHHA. Their wings act like rotund flying boats!

Hi ANON with Thumbs!!!
We call them Smelican's and they are Ted's spirit animal, although he denies it and tries to pin the Smeilican on me. We had the unfortunate luck to lodge above the sea-cliffs at Pismo Beach where they sleep and POOP all day and night and we got to enjoy their fragrant on-shore wind smell. Nothing smells worse than years of fermenting digested fish poop.

Oh yeah, I love the improvement to the side bar with the picture profiles of all of the bird regulars!

"Magestic" is a great description for Pelicans Red Mojo!

Hi Princess Pepper Cloud who gave me thumbs!!! EWWWW you have a totem Smelican as a hubbie HAHA!! I haven't experienced years worth of pelicans' fermenting digested fish poop; good news you "enjoyed their fragrant" perfume! HAHA!! Oh thanks about the sidebar, it was time for refurbishment :)

ANNOUNCEMENT: I have no more online quota for today, so will be rapidly soaring around before midday tomorrow to catch up on all your blogs - until then!

The top photos look like the pelican is as white as ghost, almost looks like wood. We have many pelicans in Florida. They always loved to take away our catch. Because a pelican can.

Ghastly instead of ghostly lighting for the top ones Ces :) A Peli Can can catch like a garbage can!
