We also have wood ducks but ours don't float and they are on top of the coffee table. They never get wet. Are thse also called mandarin ducks? The ones that lay their eggs on trees?

These are only named Australian Wood Ducks Ces and DO lay eggs in trees; plus we don't have them on coffee tables :)

Is that a crest on the back of the head?

Anonymous said...

How observant of you ElizT, but you do know horses .... and manes! That is a small black MANE on the back of the male's head, and the female has a paler brown!!

They're pretty!

They ARE pretty Red Mojo, and see how the female Australian is prettier than the male in Wood Ducks! Rare in the bird world :)

it is rare!

Prettier girls than boys in the bird world is rare Simon but not Wood Ducks ... they are almost everywhere in Australia and even vagrants in New Zealand :)

Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Our visiting wood ducks like to share themselves around. They nest in our gum tree then take their young to a neighbours dam for a month or two. They crossed the road in front of our car the other morning as they made their way from that neighbour to another neighbour on the other side of the street.

I just visited your photography blog .... love those photographs of the bats. I burst out laughing at the boys. Smiles *!*

Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Bimbimbie! Any chance of seeing a photo of a Wood Duck's gum tree nest some time? Pretty please :) I have followed these ducks all over the place to find their nest, but maybe they were just 'sharing themselves around' at the time because it was always dark by the time I gave up!

OH YES! Those boy bats are show-offs! HHHAAHA

Duck L-orange. Who would eat a duck? I never figured that out.

Tsup*!* Tsup*!*.... I have a post about this latest brood of ducklings jumping out of the gum tree. You'll find it within the 2007 posts - Sat Dec 22 halfway down
if you click on the third photo from the end you'll see the hollows they nest in. Be warned it was a sad post.

I know Thai duck is too oily for my taste buds Ces! Hehheee.

Thankyou Bimbimbie Tsup*!* Tsup*!* Thought you might have one posted already ... on my way!!!

OVER TO SEE HOLLOWS ...

Oh dear ... I was so excited I didn't read your "SAD WARNING"! at the end of your comment Bimbimbie
:( ... still very worth seeing your Tree of Life :) THANKS!!

Bimbimbie said...

.... watch how you go climbing those trees checking out the hollows ... make sure you have your wings on ;)

Snakes don't really bother me but a dropbear might be up there! Used my wings just in case ;) Heehee!!

Oh, these are lovely ducks, Anon! I love the eye lines on the female -- very fetching. Just today I was driving along the creek (Eli swears someday I'll drive *into* the creek while looking for birds) and I had my eye out for wood ducks. It's too early for ours ... but there is some water action going on ... Canada geese and mallards.

Anonymous said...

Water action in the United States as well as the United Kingdom Melissa! It is growing to be exciting everywhere but here *sigh* At least these birds' pool party will continue into our autumn ... brrrrr... I'm looking forward to seeing some of your Wood Ducks ;)

ANNOUNCEMENT: Only a few more days until my internet quota is back to normal. I will be very scarce online tomorrow ...

Great birds Anony but look at the water!!!! The movement, the colors, the... well everything. I have just fallen on the floor with excitement! Can I use it as inspiration for a painting? Yes I do need to get out more...

She looks a little flirty to me Little Miss Dotty - but - that's a good thing ;-D

Woody look like he needs to relax a bit! hee hee

Great shots Anon.

I wonder... perhaps I should ask you to photograph me too - I could come out looking half passable :-D

Anonymous said...

Hello Mountaingirl, nice of you to fly this way. I do hope you haven't injured yourself with all that excitement! OF COURSE you can paint; these photographs ARE here FOR inspiration! That is their main purpose ;)

Hhehhee I like the name "Little Miss Dotty", but these two are an OLD couple Miladysa! See, she's also wearing tutu like pantaloons. Woody does think she's high maintenance. Have a family shoot today but you might look a bit windswept and even less passable after flying the great distance to get here and they won't let you in ... ;)

The unfortunate Australian Brick Duck is seldom seen on the surface of water, these ducks are fortunate.

Anonymous said...

Wood Ducks are most fortunate compared to Brick Ducks Professor Fufu-u! Now I know why I have never seen a Brick Duck ... :) Must go snorkling some time!

Thanks Anony - I have another six on the go so this one will be number 7 in line but I will post the progress as I get going :-)

Goodie Mountaingirl! Artistic cross pollination goes back to the ancient Greeks where it began as a written description of art. It's called Ekphrasis and is now applied to music, sculpture, literature as well as painting, photography and poetry ;)
