Pied Cormorant

More common in the south and along the coast of south-western Australia. Pied Cormorants have nictitating membranes covering and protecting the eyes underwater, and their feathers are not waterproof.

From a distance, I thought he was a penguin at first!

These are all the same photo, aren't they? Are you trying to sneak one past us?

His head is moving ever so slightly to his right Perriette. You need glasses.

It's been framed in wood and very well too.

They are supposed to be a lot further South, or the other side of Australia MerlinPrincesse! They use the dead trees for roosting and nesting, maybe he had to travel this far to find one and he has a very picky wife?

Have to admit, this bird IS posing Modroom!

He hunts underwater so his feathers are permeable to allow for decreased buoyancy Ces :)

It's not THAT funny Joy Eliz ... we DO have penguins here too! Not at this lagoon, but over the hill on the other side ... they are on the list to photograph :)

I think it IS cute and funny -especially because Penguins are Stinky...
So not only do you have quite a bit of squawking but you have the stinky smell!!!
hahahahahahahaha!

HAHAHHAAAA funny is one thing Joy Eliz, however cute is ugly but interesting ... you must find stinky smells interesting because can't usually smell anything below your own stench! HHHEHHEHHEEEEE

Joy Eliz said...

Are you saying I STINK?
I don't stink, YOU stink!
Stink Stink Anony!

Joy Eliz, you are all confused Dear. Our penguins are called FAIRY penguins. Now, how much do you think they would smell now HAH? You are trying to compare them to American penguins which are big, fat noisy giants. Ours are dainty, pretty, petite and smell like fish. But you would have to stick your beak into theirs to smell their breakfast! WHO'S Stinky Joy!?!

Hi,

I thought all sea-/waterbirds have waterproof feathers?

Cheers, Chai

Hi Tsun-Thai Cahi :) Yes, you would think so wouldn't you! When out of the water, they squeeze their feathers through their bill using oil from large preen glands situated at the base of their tails! It must help a lot not having waterproof feathers when hunting under the water :)
