Nests

A possum could have made this old termite nest into its own although, the entrance is more the size for a bird.

Two nests.

Quite a large nest very high up.

A tiny nest hanging over water.

The Purple Swamphen's nest.

A nest from last excursion.

They're good but not like a deckchair.

Stange how an egg doesn't like feathered cushioning ...

Fantastic nest collection Anon, my fave is the ex-termite nest as Ive never seen a nest like that before - a brilliant find - thanks for sharing them!

You should see all the nests in our coffee table Lavender ... we collect discarded ones :)

!!! I used to do that back in my 'country of origin' hehehe...but then I also collected all sorts of odd treasures from nature...I once found a birds skull, it may have been an (american) Robin...it was so delicate, translucent, paper thin, and the long straight faded black beak still attached...might sound freakish to some, but I treasured it.

OH Lavender! Are you psychic? There is a skull to be posted very soon :)

I agree with you, Mauve Lady! Collecting from nature is cool! Those are the nicest treasures of the world!!! :)
Many years ago, my mom has found a big nest made with old phone cables. It's a work of art. She's going to give it to me one day! :) Maybe I should take a pic and post it on my blog... :)

Made my first income by selling rocks to teachers. My greatest find was one that had stryofoam balls imbedded into it Heehee. Do post your phone cable nest MerlinPrincesse! I won't ask questions now and wait to see it :)

WHAT'S wrong with purple chickens Joy Eliz?

It's amazing to watch the birds create their nest. Humans should take lessons from their engineering and architectural skills. Our backyard tree is full if nests and in the spring and summer it is so noisy with the songs of different bird families. This year the cicadas took over so it is a bit sleepy in 100 degree temperatures.

A HUNDRED degrees Ces!?! I'm assuming that isn't Celsius temperatures ... We get a few cicadas in Summer, but the birds keep their numbers down :)

Nothing wrong with purple chicken - I just want to see her purple eggs - But how can I with a nest like that? It just looks like someone dumped a pile of twigs on the ground...
(oh, I know I'm going to get yelled at for saying so...)

Anonymous said...

Joy Eliz, not only did they 'dump' the 'twigs' on the ground, they killed the grass and stomped back and forth on their nest to 'make' it!

Fantastic pics, Anon. With those nests under your coffee table, how do you deal with all the little things that want to crawl, jump and grow out of them?

We check there isn’t anything living first ElizT! Then the nests are sealed beneath glass ElizT! That is an old photograph of the coffee table, its insides change all the time … :)

Fly spray?

Anonymous said...

No need for fumigation ElizT ... just leave in the outside laundry or garage for a few weeks first. Don't want to contaminate our coffee!

Thanks, though ours are mostly mundane blackbird ones.

ALL nests are a work of art ElizT!

I only get to see this stuff on tv. You get to see this? You've been there?

Cool pictures. I like Kookaburra.

Hello Tsduff! Yes, I took all of these photographs in my backyard and surrounds. Kookaburras would be difficult to see in real life from where you are :) I like your avatar!
